The first step is to add each Expert TA assignment link in the External Learning Tools for the class.
Note: You CANNOT reuse links created for a previous class by changing the assignment link and the key and shared secret for the new class because D2L hangs on to something from the previous configuration that will cause it not to work. All new links need to be created for each new class.
- From inside your class in D2L, Select More from the menu bar at the top
- Select Course Admin from the menu
- Then select External Learning Tools from Site Resources
- On the next screen click on Manage Tool Links (Legacy)
- Once that page opens select New Link
- From here, you will add a New Link for each of your Expert TA assignments.
- Enter a title for your link. It might be a good idea to include Expert TA in the front of all your assignment names so that they are grouped together and it will make it easier to locate them when creating your assignments in D2L. (example: Expert TA – HW1)
- Enter the URL from the Expert TA assignment
- Next select Link key/secret and enter your Consumer Key in the “Key” field and your Shared Secret in the “Secret” field
- Next under Security Settings click on Use link security settings and select all the checkboxes
- Lastly click Save and close
Next, you will create an assignment and link it to the corresponding External Tool you created for that assignment.
- Select Content from the menu bar
- Select Homework, if not already selected for you
- Then click on New and select New Assignment from the drop-down menu
- Name your assignment. It might be a good idea to keep the assignment name similar to the assignment name Expert TA (example: HW1)
- Enter a point value for the assignment
- Enter a due date, if you wish
- Then click on Attach Link to Existing Activity (lightning bolt with a link symbol at the bottom)
- From the menu that pops up select External Learning Tools
- Locate the learning tool for the corresponding assignment (example: Expert TA – HW1)
- Lastly click Save and Close.
- Go back into the configuration of the assignment (Edit Properties in Place) and select Open as External Learning Source so that the assignment will open in a new browser tab.
- Don’t forget to add a grade book item for each assignment, and the name needs to match the Expert TA assignment name EXACTLY or there will be two entries in your grade book once the students' grades sync up.
Alternate Method to create an assignment if "Open as External Learning Source" is not available after creating the assignment.
- Select Content from the menu bar
- Select Homework, if not already selected for you
- Then click on Existing Activities and select External Learning Tools from the drop-down menu.
- Locate the learning tool for the corresponding assignment (example: Expert TA - HW1)
- The assignment should now be created with the external link. Go to Edit Properties in Place and select Open as External Learning Source so that the assignment will open in a new browser tab.
- Don't forget to add a grade book item for each assignment, and the name needs to match the Expert TA assignment name EXACTLY or there will be two entries in our grade book once the students' grades sync up.
You can now click on the assignment and it should open the Expert TA assignment in a new browser tab. Note: if the assignment is not open, it will show a screen indicating when the assignment is available.
