Moodle LTI 1.1 Integration Instructions

Note: For assignments already created in Expert TA with a current publish date of today or earlier.  


Part 1 – Configure the Expert TA LTI Tool in Moodle


Step 1 – Access the Tool Setup

  1. Go to your Moodle course site and turn Edit mode on.

  2. From the course navigation, select the More dropdown.

  3. Click LTI external tools.

  4. Click Add tool.


Step 2 – Basic Tool Information

Fill in the Basic Information section:

  • Tool nameMatch the Expert TA assignment name (e.g., Chapter 1 Homework).

  • Tool URL – Copy from Expert TA (Edit Assignment menu). Remove https:// and ensure there’s no extra spaces on either end.

  • Tool description(Optional)

  • LTI version – Select 1.0/1.1 (default).


Step 3 – Security Keys

From Expert TA → Class menu → Edit class:

  • Consumer key – Copy from Expert TA.

  • Shared secret – Copy from Expert TA.

  • Custom parameters – Leave blank.


Step 4 – Launch and Linking Options

  • Default launch container – New window. *Very Important*

  • Deep Linking – Leave unchecked.

  • Content Selection URL – Leave blank.


Step 5 – Services

  • Do not use IMS LTI Assignment and Grade Services

  • Do not use IMS LTI Names and Role Provisioning

  • Use Tool Settings


Step 6 – Privacy

  • Always share launcher’s name with the tool

  • Always share launcher’s email with the tool

  • Always accept grades from the tool

  • Check Force SSL


Step 7 – Save

Click Save changes to finish tool setup. 



Part 2 – Link the Tool to a Specific Expert TA Assignment 


Step 1 – Add the External Tool Activity

  1. Go to your Moodle course page and make sure Edit mode is on.

  2. Click Add an activity or resource in the section where the assignment should appear.

  3. Select External tool.


Step 2 – Configure the Activity

Fill in the form:

  • Activity name – Match the Expert TA assignment name.

  • Activity description(Optional) 

  • Display description on course page – Leave checked


Step 3 – Grade Settings

  • Grade – Set the maximum points to match the Expert TA assignment.  This needs to contain a value of 1 or greater in order for the grades to sync correctly.

  • Grade category(Optional) Choose the appropriate category if you organize your gradebook.


Step 4 – Save and Test

  1. Click Save and return to course (or Save and display to test immediately).

  2. Launch the activity as a teacher to confirm it opens the correct Expert TA assignment.
